The Minnesota Department of Transportation is hosting a public meeting on Monday, Oct. 21, at 5:30 p.m. in the Yanmar Ice Arena at 1401 NW 3rd Ave., Grand Rapids, MN 55744, to talk about the Hwy 2/169 corridor study through Grand Rapids and La Prairie. The study includes the Hwy 2 cor­ridor from NW 19th Avenue to NE 7th Street and the Hwy 169 corridor from Hwy 2 to the Mississippi River. MnDOT will be evaluating existing conditions (traffic volumes, operations and safety) and future conditions that account for growth and anticipated development in Grand Rapids and La Prai­rie. The study includes collecting existing traffic and safety data and crash analysis, completing a preliminary scan of potential environmental impacts, developing preliminary cor­ridor concepts, providing an estimate of project costs, conducting an evaluation of alternative concepts and selecting a preferred alternative for the corridor. The study will provide intersection and corridor recommendations to increase safety for all traffic and increased pedestrian and bicycle usage to and from destinations on both sides of Hwy 2 and Hwy 169. Sunday October 13th around 10 in the morning, a fire was reported on Lake Vermillion. According to reports a boat house and sauna were destroyed. Multiple fire departments from around the region responded to help prevent the fire from spreading due to other structures in the area plus a propane tank in close proximity of the fire. Ambulance service responded from Tower in case of injuries which were not reported in the incident.








The 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth is welcoming 225 airmen home from a three-month deployment to Japan. The Minnesota National Guard members returned this morning (Mon) from the 18th Wing Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Some of the personnel and their F-16 aircrafts participated in India’s largest multi-national exercise. One of their loved ones had a sign that read, “I’ve waited 110 days to hug my daddy.”

 







Reports from the Arrowhead in northeastern Minnesota indicate some of the first snow of the season yesterday. The National Weather Service in Duluth isn’t confirming measurable snowfall but has a photo of light snow on grassy areas near Brimson. Another resident took a picture of snow on the ground and trees near Isabella.

 








Itasca County Board of Commissioners set to hold their regular work session board meeting today, Tuesday Oct 15th starting at 230 at the Itasca County Courthouse board room. A work session is a meeting of the County Board designed to provide an opportunity for in-depth review and discussion of topics that may come before the Board at a Regular Session for official action. They are also an opportunity for trainings, presentations, and informational updates. Work Sessions are scheduled on the first and third Tuesday of each month and are open to the public. Itasca County Board of Commissioners next regular scheduled meeting will take place on Tuesday Oct 22nd at the Itasca County Courthouse boardroom.
