Forestry Day in St Louis County

Fifth graders from a dozen schools in southern St. Louis County will spend part of their day in the woods next Tuesday as part of the 40th annual 5th Grade Forestry Field Day. Forestry Day is a natural resource education outreach event sponsored by the Minnesota chapter of The Society of American Foresters. It will be held September 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at three locations: Lester Park, Chester Park and Upper Spirit Mountain. Students will learn about tree identification, sustainable use of forestry products, safe hiking to leave no trace, and more. There will also be demonstrations involving a portable sawmill, woodland animals from the zoo, and a wildland fire fighting rig. Professionals representing a range of forest industry roles will provide the presentations and interactive demonstrations for students.
