The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency remains committed to protecting human health and the environment and supporting sustainable job growth in the state.
The MPCA received more than 1,000 comments during the public comment period for the Keetac wastewater discharge permits. In consideration of comments related to affordability, the MPCA has requested additional information from U.S. Steel for its permits at Keetac. We continue to work with U.S. Steel to address compliance with the proposed sulfate effluent limits and on other issues raised in the public comments.
The MPCA has committed to meeting with U.S. Steel weekly to discuss technical issues and to develop a plan by March 4 to detail the schedule to issue a permit(s).
If we revise the permits in any substantiative way, another public comment period will be required. We will respond to comments received during the public comment period(s) when the final permit or permits are issued.
We are committed to continuing to provide updates throughout this process.
