Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital is proud to announce its redesignation as an Acute Stroke Ready Hospital (ASRH), a status it has maintained since the designation inception ten years ago. This recognition highlights the hospital and the commitment to providing exceptional care for stroke patients and improving patient outcomes. As one of 120 hospitals in Minnesota designated for its preparedness to evaluate and treat acute stroke symptoms, Grand Itasca emphasizes the importance of timely access to care. With stroke being the fifth leading cause of death in the state, the hospital plays a critical role in ensuring swift treatment. The ASRH designation confirms Grand Itasca’s ability to stabilize and treat stroke patients effectively, potentially saving lives and reducing long-term disabilities.

A substitute teacher at Woodbury High School is accused of reenacting police actions in the 2020 murder of George Floyd on Monday. In a letter sent to families, Principal Sarah Sorenson-Wagner says students reported the sub twisting a student’s arm behind their back and showing pressure points on their chin and face, made racist and sexist remarks and jokes, spoke “in disturbing detail about dead bodies he had seen and two sexual assault cases he investigated,” and stated, “police brutality isn’t real.” The Woodbury Police Department is investigating the claims, and the teacher has been trespassed from any South Washington County schools. Sorenson-Wahner says they’re working with Teachers on Call to ensure the person is removed from the sub list.

The highly anticipated North Star Promise Program is in full effect this fall.  The program helps cover tuition and fees for Minnesota students with a family adjusted gross income under $80,000 who are studying at a public institution or tribal college in state. Scholarships can be applied for studies up to a four-year degree. Students and other college access advocates had pitched the North Star Promise to the Minnesota Legislature as a way to close equity gaps in higher education, address workforce shortages across the state and reverse declining enrollment. Already, some colleges and universities are reporting higher enrollment this fall compared to last. North Star is also making an impact on college affordability in the region. Nearly 17,000 students have received North Star Promise scholarships in Minnesota this fall, according to preliminary data from Minnesota Office of Higher Education.   This story is courtesy of MPR News.

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 85 counties in Minnesota due to extreme fire danger for today. All counties are effected in the state during this red flag warning from the national weather service. A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and easily progress out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including gusty winds and low relative humidity. Do not burn in counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and check any recent burning to ensure the fire is completely out. The DNR will not issue or activate open burning permits for large vegetative debris burning during the Red Flag Warning, and campfires are discouraged. Additionally, a Special Weather Statement has been issued for Cook and Lake counties in northeast Minnesota where wind and relative humidity are predicted to produce near-critical fire weather conditions. Outdoor burning is discouraged. Stay tuned to updates from the National Weather Service.
