The Grand Rapids City Council will hold a work session and regular city council meeting today Monday Oct 14th. The City Council workshop meeting will be held at 4 this afternoon in the city hall council chambers located in Grand Rapids. For those interested in looking at the agenda beforehand you may find it on the city website. Afterwards, the Grand Rapids City Council will hold a regular scheduled city council meeting starting at 5 in the evening. This meeting will also take place at the Grand Rapids City Hall Council Chambers. You can also find the agenda for the upcoming meeting on the Grand Rapids city website. The next scheduled meeting for Grand Rapids City Council is set for Monday Oct 28th starting at 5.





Three people received charges including an attempted murder in the second degree charge in the 9th District Court in Grand Rapids for the shooting incident that occurred in Calumet in the early morning hours last week. According to court documents, the incident was the result of an argument that had taken place between multiple individuals that was going on most of the day. Approximately around 230 in the morning on Monday Oct 7th Itasca County Sheriff's Office responded to a report on a shooting in Calumet. Law enforcement arrived on scene and found a female victim had a possible gunshot wound, lacerations with severe bleeding and was life flighted to Duluth. A male victim was transported via private vehicle to Grand Itasca with what appeared to be 3 gunshot wounds. Stay tuned to Rapids Radio for continued coverage of this incident.

 




Authorities on the Iron Range say a man did not survive life-threatening injuries suffered in a house fire near Eveleth.  The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office says 63-year-old Dale Wallander died in a Twin Cites hospital.  Deputies found Wallander lying at the end of his driveway with burns over most of his body early Friday afternoon.  His home was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.  The State Fire Marshal’s Office is helping local investigators determine the cause of the fire.

 







Two hikers are safe after the St. Louis County Rescue Team found them at Bear Head State Park Saturday near Ely.  A hiker called 9-1-1 after 6 p-m , needing help getting out of the woods.  Poor cell coverage made for no contact between deputies and the hiker.  The county dispatch center used the caller’s G-P-S coordinates to send deputies to their location.  Rescue squad members walked the hikers out of the woods, who they learned were unfamiliar with the area.









Great Tails Animal Rescue, an organization located in Itasca County in the city of Cohasset is holding a site prep event as they get ready to break ground for their new shelter. The public is invited to attend the event. Other individuals in attendance include a building committee volunteer who will give a brief speech with other members of the board, members of Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, and former and current council members of the City of Cohasset.

 







A public hearing will take place on Friday Oct 18th at Hill City School. The topic of discussion: Local Watershed Plan. A draft plan for managing water in the Upper Mississippi – Grand Rapids Watershed is getting closer to being completed which can help open up additional funding for other watershed projects. This has taken 2 years to get to this point in the project. The public hearing is scheduled for 11:30 Friday morning. The Upper Mississippi – Grand Rapids 1W1P’s Policy Committee will hear public input on the draft comprehensive water management plan that sets goals and strategies for the next 10-years. The public can view the draft plan online on the Itasca Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) website. The plan is intended to show ideas to have the highest return on investment for improving water quality and quantity.

 




The Stuff the Bus event which was held by United Way of 1000 lakes is excited to announce record support of their event. Because of the response during the event, United Way, is able to support and prepare over 350 students for this year of 2024. According to research it is said that children who begin school prepared for learning are much more to have improved attendance, higher grades, and send time in other school related activities. The program serves students and their families across Itasca County and the surrounding communities, including Bigfork, Cohasset, Coleraine, Deer River, Grand Rapids, Hill City, Nashwauk, Pengilly, and Warba. Last week in the Wilcox Theater at the Reif Center, 7 candidates for Grand Rapids Area Schools school board participated in a forum discussion. Questions were submitted and vetted and were each asked of the candidates who submitted responses. With only 60 seconds to answer, audience and live stream viewers sat in anticipation as candidates had to answer. Some of the questions asked ranged from their views on bullying, to how they felt about upcoming contract negotiations.
