Hibbing Police and Emergency Services responded to a school bus versus vehicle crash just before 8 yesterday morning at the intersection of Hwy 5 and Townline Road in Hibbing in St Louis County. The crash resulted in the school bus that was hit to roll onto its side. When the crash occurred a driver and 20 students were on the bus heading to Cherry School. A witness reported the crash who also stated that students were crawling out of the bus under their own power. Hibbing EMS along with the Fire Department arrived on scene with 4 ambulances and three fire trucks and requested mutual aid from Chisholm, Buhl, Eveleth, and Virginia. Also on scene were St Louis County Sheriff, Minnesota State Patrol, Cherry Fire and First Responders and several other certified first responders who responded to the call. Crews discovered that the passenger vehicle that was involved in the crash had significant damage to the passenger compartment. The driver who was the only occupant of the vehicle needed to be extracted out of the vehicle and was flown via helicopter to Essentia Health for Life Threatening Injuries. All passengers of the bus were able to exit the bus under their own power and were assisted and assessed on scene by EMS and Law Enforcement. A total of 11 parties, 1 adult and 10 students were transported via ambulance to Fairview Range in Hibbing or Essentia Health in Virginia with non life threatening injuries. This case is currently under investigation.
