The fourth Thursday in November has been celebrated as Thanksgiving for many years and is commonly, but not universally, traced to a poorly documented 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. This year the holiday falls on the last day possible in the month and this Thanksgiving Day is also the start of the Hanukkah celebration, which may not occur again for several thousand years. Currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by federal legislation in 1941. American football is one of the many traditions that is associated with Thanksgiving Day. Virtually every level of football, from amateur and high school to college and the NFL plays football on Thanksgiving Day or the immediately following holiday weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday).
