The Taconite American Legion baseball team began a busy week with a convincing 9-5 victory over Deer River in Marble on Monday but suffered a tough 3-2 defeat to Ely on Tuesday night in Ely.
It was a well-pitched game between Taconite’s John Labine and Ely’s Will Gustafson. Gustafson earned the win allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out four while walking two in the game. Labine was the tough luck loser on the mound. He allowed three runs, two earned, on seven hits while striking out four while walking three.
Taconite fell behind in the third inning when Ely scratched across a run. Taconite rallied back for a run in the fifth when Kole Kalisch reached which allowed Pat Shea to score. However, Ely answered with single runs in the fifth and the sixth to take the lead.
A dropped fly ball in the seventh allowed Joe LaDoux to score for Taconite to make it 3-2, however, a line drive to left ended the contest and Ely picked up its second win over Taconite during the season.
The loss moves Taconite to 9-7 overall on the season and they are back in action tonight with a trip to Esko.
