At 2:47 Wednesday morning, neighbors at the north end of Pokegama Avenue awoke to the sound of a car accelerating at a high rate of speed north on Pokegama Avenue. At the “T “intersection with Crystal Lake Boulevard the vehicle went straight, landing in Crystal Lake. A female passenger was able to get out of the vehicle and was helped ashore by residents.

Grand Rapids Police Sergeant Heath Smith, Officer Troy Scott and Coleraine Police Officer Pete Hussman arrived at the scene within three minutes of the 9-1-1 call. They swam out to the vehicle to try to rescue the male driver. They were unsuccessful. The Grand Rapids Fire Department and The Itasca County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Dive Team responded to the scene. The driver was found in the car, deceased.
