At 2:47 Wednesday morning, neighbors at the north end of Pokegama Avenue awoke to the sound of a car accelerating at a high rate of speed north on Pokegama Avenue. At the “T “intersection with Crystal Lake Boulevard the vehicle went straight, landing in Crystal Lake. A female passenger was able to get out of the vehicle and was helped ashore by residents.

Grand Rapids Police Sergeant Heath Smith, Officer Troy Scott and Coleraine Police Officer Pete Hussman arrived at the scene within three minutes of the 9-1-1 call. They swam out to the vehicle to try to rescue the male driver. They were unsuccessful. The Grand Rapids Fire Department and The Itasca County Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Dive Team responded to the scene. The driver was found in the car, deceased.

The female passenger is being treated at the Grand Itasca Hospital for non-life threatening injuries. The incident is being investigated by the Grand Rapids Police Department, Itasca County Sheriff’s Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.

The Grand Rapids Police Department and State Patrol have jurisdiction with regard to the motor vehicle crash. The Sheriff’s Department has jurisdiction with regard to all water incidents. A State Patrol Accident Reconstructionist was called to the scene. This is an on-going joint investigation by these agencies.

The names of those involved in the crash are not being released at this time.

Five local residents appointed to the Governor's Task Force on Wild Rice.

The Governor’s Task Force on Wild Rice is a nonpartisan group of experts and key stakeholders who are committed to finding a compromise solution to wild rice restoration and protection in Minnesota. The Task Force, appointed by Governor Dayton, is comprised of representatives from Tribal Nations, industry, environmental advocacy groups, scientists, state government agencies, and other stakeholders.

Over the coming months, the Task Force will work to review existing peer-reviewed scientific literature and existing wild rice conditions. The Task Force will also help develop recommendations on funding for additional data collection, best management practices for protecting and restoring wild rice, sulfate minimization plans, and the development and installation of cost-effective sulfate treatment technologies.

By December 15, 2018, the Governor’s Task Force on Wild Rice will recommend specific policy proposals and actions that can be taken by the Executive and Legislative branches of state government and the private sector to protect wild rice in Minnesota, while supporting continued economic development and job creation across the state.

Motorcyclist Identified:
St. Louis County Sheriff's Office:
Incident Summary: On September 6th, 2018, at approximately 7:29 PM the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office along with the Chisholm Police Department, MN State Patrol, Chisholm Fire and Ambulance Service, and North Memorial Air Care responded to the 5500 block of McNiven Rd. in Chisholm, MN in Balkan Township for a motorcycle accident with injuries. A 29 year old Chisholm man was driving alone on his motorcycle traveling westbound on McNiven Rd. when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. The male was treated on scene by members of the Chisholm Ambulance Service and then airlifted by North Memorial Air Care to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, MN. Speed is believed to be a cause of the accident. The accident is under investigation by the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office.
28 year old Kenny Forsman of Chisholm is being treated for his injuries.
