In a rematch from last year’s District 8, Division II championship, Ely rolled past Taconite, 13-3, in five innings at the Steve Hecimovich Memorial Field in Marble.
Ely darted out of the gates by scoring four runs in the top of the first and eventually put the game away with an eight-run, eighth inning. Ely roped out 15 hits en route to the 10-run victory.
Louis Gerzin earned the win on the mound. He went four innings allowing three runs, one earned, on two hits. He struck out 11 while walking four batters.
Eight of nine Ely starters recorded hits in the game with Pat Huisman and Elliot Omerza leading the way, each with three hits and two runs batted in. Spencer Gaulke added two hits and a run batted in while Gerzin added two hits and two runs batted in. Will Gustafson added a hit and drove home two runs. Bradley Roy, Jeff Willis and Max Gantt each drove in a run for Ely.
Pat Shea had a hit and a run batted in for Taconite. Kadin Kalisch drove home a run while Kole Kalisch and Mitch Bonderson recorded hits in the loss. John Labine walked twice and scored both times.
Tyler Peterson suffered the loss on the mound. He allowed 11 runs, seven earned, in three and a third of work. He walked three and struck out one.
Taconite falls to 3-1 overall as they prepare to take part in the Ely Tournament where they will play Blackduck and Brookston on Friday before taking on Roseau and Minnetonka on Saturday.
