PRESS RELEASE

FRAUD ALERT
March 25, 2019

The Grand Rapids Police Department wants to make our local businesses aware of a fraud that is reported to be operating in our area. School District #318 often puts out Sports and Activity Calendars. Area businesses can purchase advertisement space on these calendars to promote their businesses. The money raised from these activity calendars helps support sport and extracurricular activities i.e. travel costs, uniforms, meals and entry fees.
School District #318 has partnered with Steve Lynch. Mr. Lynch sells the advertisement space on these calendars to local businesses and organizations. He is the only person authorized by the school district to sell ad space on these calendars. All legitimate invoices to businesses who purchase advertising space on District 318 calendars will note on the invoice that it is from “TH Signs / #318 Poster Fund.” Invoices are sent in District 318 envelopes.
It has been reported to the Police Department that a company called “Sports Media”, has been exploiting this. Sports Media notes which businesses have purchased advertisement space on these legitimate calendars and will send these businesses a bogus invoice for advertising. This is a fraud and is not affiliated with District 318.
Area businesses have reported receiving fraudulent invoices and letters demanding payment. If you have questions about the legitimacy of these calendars please contact the District 318 Activities Office at 218-327-5765. If you would like to have more information, please contact Investigator Brian Mattson at the Grand Rapids Police Department at (218) 326-3464.
