During March of 2019, the Grand Rapids Police Department initiated a controlled substance investigation.
Four separate controlled buys of methamphetamine (Schedule II Controlled Substance) were made from the same suspect.

On May 6, the Grand Rapids Police Department executed a search warrant at 54 year old Bobby Joe Highland’s residence. Law enforcement recovered a plastic baggie later found to contain 48.2 grams of suspected methamphetamine (field-tested positive). Also located during the search was a clear glass vial with a red cap from a black pouch on a stand next to the recliner in the living room. The contents of the vial weighed 3.1 grams and field tested positive for methamphetamine. The total amount of methamphetamine seized from the residence on 5-7-19 was 51.3 grams. Highland admitted that the methamphetamine belonged to him.

On May 9th, Highland appeared in Itasca County District Court on charges including two counts of Felony First Degree Sale of Controlled Substances, one count of Felony First Degree Possession of Controlled Substances, and one count of Felony Fifth Degree Possession of Controlled Substances.

The Court ordered bail, as recommended by the State, at $200,000 without conditions and $100,000 with conditions. Highland’s next court appearance is set for May 13, 2019 at 9:00 a.m.
