Multiple fire departments responded Tuesday to a large house fire in rural Gilbert. The blaze was reported around 2:30 on French Avenue East, which is just off of Highway 37 between Gilbert and Eveleth. The home was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived. No one was home at the time.
Two dogs were rescued. One dog was rescued right away, while another was found hiding under the house by Fayal Fire Captain Nick Preiner. The second dog (Henley) was treated by Eveleth EMS personnel on the scene and given oxygen. Both were taken to a local veterinary hospital with burns and smoke inhalation. Both dogs are reportedly doing well.
Fire departments on the scene included: Gilbert, Fayal, Eveleth, Mountain Iron, Virginia, Biwabik, Biwabik Township, and the Minnesota DNR. The home appears to be a total loss. Two dogs were rescued and were treated at a nearby animal hospital.
