There will be a fifth round-about in our area. For the past twelve years the topic of a road through the Itasca County Fairgrounds has caused discussion, often heated and always polarized. It appears the City of Grand Rapids is about to commit. Julie Kennedy, City Engineer says the project would start immediately after road restrictions are lifted in May and would be done in mid-August before the fair begins. Itasca County Commissioner Rusty Eichorn said there have been several community meetings to help with this decision and the round-about arose from them. The stakeholders involved in the decision making process the list is quite extensive, like the AG association, the vintage car club … and of course, the taxpayers of Itasca County. They were all involved in the decision process to arrive with this plan as the final chosen plan. One point to note is that residents in the area will not be losing any property. The round-about will go over the dirt and gravel parking area at the southern end of the fairground and will include some green-space, a parking area and a storm water treatment area. Included in the project will be an upgrade to Crystal Lake Boulevard and some proposed trails.
