Highway Closed for Three Hours

East-bound Highway 169 in LaPrarie was closed for up to three hours this morning. A semi truck with a trailer was pulling out from the L&M warehouse in LaPrarie when the trailer became detached. The driver of the semi, identified as Bernard Fredrick Schulte of Bigfork, stopped and got out of the truck. The truck driver was then struck by a Buick Century travelling eastbound. The Century driver, Michael David Yennie, administered aid and called 9-1-1. Schulte was taken to St. Luke’s in Duluth with life-threatening injuries.

Accident Reveals Intoxicated Driver

A two vehicle accident Tuesday evening resulted in a possible 4th degree DWI charge. According to the complaint, a 54 year old man was driving near the intersection of 3rd Avenue Northwest and 14th Street in Grand Rapids when he was unable to stop. His vehicle collided with another vehicle already in the intersection.
The driver had two passengers in the vehicle. When officers arrived, all three were standing outside the vehicle. The driver was found to be driving two teens from the TNT group home.
The officer on scene detected the smell of alcohol in the vehicle and administered a breath test to the driver. The driver admitted his last alcoholic drink was at 4am. A valid breath test onsite revealed a .118 blood alcohol content. He was placed under arrest. North Homes was advised about the arrest and the vehicle location.

Home Damaged by Fire

Grand Rapids, Cohasset, and Trout Lake Fire Departments responded to a home fire on South East 3rd Avenue in Grand Rapids Saturday night.
According to the Grand Rapids Police report, officers responded to the scene at 112 S.E. 3rd Avenue in Grand Rapids and found the home owner out of the home. He told officers that the home was filled with smoke and he saw flames coming from the basement furnace room. The homeowner told police that he had just had a new furnace installed in mid December.
Fire fighters were able to knock down the fire and save the residence, according to Grand Rapids Fire Chief Travis Cole.
The state Fire Marshall has been called to investigate the fire. No value is available on the damage.

Gun Drawn on Driver

One man was taken into custody at gunpoint early this morning after a car crash in LaPrarie.
Another suspect is still on the loose.

According to the incident report, the Minnesota State Patrol was pursuing a vehicle north-bound on Highway 169, near Itasca Community College, when it crashed near Midway Trailer Court. The driver was being held at gunpoint and the passenger, reported to be in possession of a handgun, fled into the woods when Grand Rapids Police were called to assist.
Grand Rapids police held the perimeter and searched the nearby woods. Grand Rapids K-9 was called, but was not able to track the passenger.
The passenger is described at 6’3”, Native American, strong build, feather tattoo on his face, black jacket, blue jeans, and carrying a red backpack.
Anyone with information is asked to call 9-1-1.
