Community Cafe Fundraiser

Twice a week, the Community Café serves free meals in Grand Rapids and Deer River.  In 2013, the Café served up 22,000 meals.  Every Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-6:00, free meals are served up in Grand Rapids at the IRC and in Deer River at the Golden Age Center.

The Community Café is hosting a charity golf outing this Saturday.  John Webber, Executive Director of the Community Café said the golf fundraiser is this Saturday, May 16th with a shotgun start at 4:30pm.  Call the Community Café or Blueberry Hills Golf Course to sign up a team.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness month and this week (through Sunday) is Mental Health Awareness Week in the City of Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids Mayor Dale Adams proclaimed this week Mental Health week at Monday night’s City Council Meeting.

One in four adults, approximately 61.5 million Americans experiences mental illness in a given year.

Grand Rapids Puts City Tax on Ballot

The City of Grand Rapids is one step closer to implementing a 1% local sales tax.  The Grand Rapids City Council approved adding a 1% local sales tax used for city road infrastructure on the November ballot during last night’s city council meeting.  The sales tax will be voted on as a referendum by city residents this fall, and, if it passes, it must be approved by state legislature. The first of many informational meetings will be on Wednesday May 21st at 4:30 in City Hall.

May is Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and NAMI- or National Alliance for Persons with Mental Illness, is holding a number of events to raise awareness of the illness.  Holly Downing, President of the local NAMI chapter, said there are a number of events going on in Grand Rapids that you may want to get involved in.  One of them is tonight at 7pm at the Blandin Foundation focusing on eating disorders.

Next Wednesday May 14th, Sue Adberholden, Executive Director of NAMI Minnesota will be in Grand Rapids for a program titled “First Episode Psychosis and Early Intervention”.  That program will be May 14th at 7pm at the Blandin Foundation.

ISD 318 Gets New Board Member and Superintendent

Harvey Hietala is the newest director on the school board of Independent School District 318.  Doctor Patricia Westerburg resigned the position in February.  The board nominated and approved Mr. Hietala at last night’s general meeting.  Heitala will serve until the November election.

The district also has a new Superintendent.  Doctor Bruce Thomas was offered a two year contract and accepted it last night.

During last night’s meeting, the board also approved a resolution to terminate a continuing contract teacher and approved to place a teacher on unrequested leave of absence.  ISD 318 School Board meets in regular session again on May 19th at 7o’clock.

Floodwood Rollover

A 49 year old Plymouth man was injured in a one car rollover early Sunday morning on Highway 73 near Adams Road. Joseph Rose of Plymouth received non-life threatening injuries when his vehicle lost control and rolled into the ditch, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. He was transported to the Hibbing hospital with non-life threatening injures. The Floodwood police department assisted the State Patrol.

Two Die in a Cass Lake Car Accident

Two people died in a two car accident on County Road 75- near Leech Lake Route 438 in Cass County on Friday night.
27 year old Michael Stangle of Cass Lake was northbound on County Road 75 when he swerved into the northbound lane in a no-passing zone and forced one vehicle off the road, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Stangle then hit a vehicle driven by 47 year old Lisa Collins of Cass Lake head-on. Collins, and her passenger, 46 year old Timothy Collins, were killed. Stangle’s passenger, 47 year old Stacy Stangle, of Longville, was seriously injured. Stangle was also seriously injured in the accident.

Accident on Highway 169-Midway Road

Two people were injured Sunday afternoon when a teenager rear-ended a truck on Highway 169, north of Grand Rapids. Sixteen year old Katrina Meza of Nashwauk was driving southbound in a Pontiac Grand Prix when she rear-ended a 2014 Volvo VHD truck, driven by 53 year old David Pettis of Grand Rapids, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Meza and her passenger, 19 year old Alexa Johnson of Bovey both sustained non-life threatening injuries.
