Two 17 year olds were seriously injured in a one car rollover on Highway 65 Tuesday morning. 17 year old Kaitlyn Johnson of North Branch was driving a vehicle south-bound on Highway 65 when the vehicle left the road, rolled-over, and hit a tree, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Her passenger, 17 year old Cody Pokela, also of North Branch, was also seriously injured. The accident happened at 4am Tuesday.

Description: Program Director Kathy Lepak participated in a Job Fair. Over 600 juniors and seniors high students from 15 local high schools were invited to ItascaCommunity College for career demonstrations. All students had an opportunity to learn about on-air conditions, sales career opportunities and to record a mock voice-over. The booth was an interactive voice-over “screen test”, with information available about other aspects of the radio business.
Topic covered included the skills needed for each profession. Students were able to ask questions about hours, pay and responsibilities.

The school board of Independent School District 318 meets in regular session Tuesday night- in Bigfork. Once a year, the board meets in Bigfork to spend time at the school, meet with students, and talk with local residents who may not have the ability to travel to Grand Rapids for regular board meetings.
On the agenda, the board will consider directing the superintendent negotiating committee to meet with interim Superintendent Dr. Bruce Thomas about changing from an interim to permanent status.
The board will also discuss its next step in filling the vacant board chair.
The meeting begins at 7pm, with an open forum at 6:30p.
The parent company of the Blandin Paper Company is reporting a sixty percent drop in workplace accidents in the last two years. UPM reports the lost time accident frequency decreased in 2012 and 2013 by sixty percent. The total number of lost-time accidents in all UPM sites globally decreased from over 550 in 2011 to 200 in 2013. Jussi Pesonen, President and CEO of UPM said the goal for the final year of the workplace safety initiative is to reduce the number of accidents and ensure world-class safety performance in all their activities. UPM’s safety theme for 2014 are health and well-being, supplier safety, and preventing the most common sauce of accidents- falling and tripping.
corrections officer at North Homes Juvenile Correctional facility in Grand Rapids was been charged with five counts of Criminal Sexual conduct against a 15 year old North Homes resident. 23 year old Devon Michael Wood of Grand Rapids made his first court appearance in Itasca County District court on Monday.
The alleged assaults against the 15 year old girl took place between April 10th and 12th of this year.
Wood’s bail was set at $50,000 without conditions, or $30,000 with conditions. Conditions include abstaining from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs, no contact with the victim, no unsupervised contact with females under the age of 18, and keeping his court appearances.
An Aitkin woman was killed in a 3 vehicle car accident in Wright County on Wednesday evening.
65 year old Karen Tibbetts was driving east bound on Highway 55 when she lost control, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
Tibbetts vehicle slid sideways into the west-bound traffic and was hit broadside by a vehicle driven by 28 year old Brett Riske of Maple Grove. A third vehicle behind Riske was also damaged. Riske and the driver of the third vehicle sustained no apparent injuries.
Sergeant Brent Bradley of the Grand Rapids police department is being demoted. Bradley is accused of not following proper policy and procedure during a domestic dispute. Policy says Bradley should have made an arrest, but did not. The suspect was arrested later.
Grand Rapids Police Chief Jim Denny said only that the Grand Rapids Police Civil Service Commission reconvened its March 28th meeting on Monday afternoon and rendered the decision to demote Bradley to patrol officer.
Grand Rapids reported the highest snowfall in history with 109 inches of snowfall in calendar year 2013, which is more than double the winter average for Grand Rapids. The Grand Rapids city council met in regular session last night at the City Hall Council Chambers. Jeff Davies of the Public Works Department gave a department head report on this past winter, the council approved the purchase of a new public works pickup truck, and hired a new firefighter. The next regular meeting scheduled will April 28th at 5 in the City Hall Council Chambers.
The School board of Independent School District has voted to end the search for a new superintendent. The board met in special session this morning. On a 4-0 vote, board members voted to end the search process and talk with Interim Superintendent Doctor Bruce Thomas about extending his position. Board member Ben Hawkins was absent.
The school board of Independent School District 318 meets in special session at 8am this morning. On the agenda, the board will discuss how to proceed with a search for a school superintendent. Last week, when interviews of potential candidates began, one of the board members was not able to participate. The board is already short one member (and seeking candidates to fill the seat). The board will discuss whether to continue the search, suspend the search, or discontinue the search until the empty seat is filled. The meeting gets underway in the administration’s board room.
