Westerberg Resigns

Independent School District 318 board member Patty Westerberg submitted her resignation to the school board last night (Monday night).  The board thanked her for her service and accepted the resignation. The last meeting Dr. Westerberg attended was December 16th. The person chosen to fill her seat will fill it until the November election. The person who wins the seat will serve Westerberg’s remaining 2-year term.

Freezing Death

The cousin of the 6 year old child who froze to death outside her apartment building in Bemidji was arrested in her death on Friday.  Twenty-two year old Rachael Stacey Downer appeared in court to face a second degree manslaughter charge in the death of six year old Mercedes Mayfield. Mercedes was found outside her apartment building on February 27th, when temperatures fell to 19 below zero with wind chills near 32 below.   Mercedes was found the next morning by her mother. Authories attempted to revive her but were unsuccessful.  Downer’s next court appearance is set for March 24th. Second degree manslaughter carries a possible penalty of 10 years in prison, and , or a $20,000 fine.

Wendigo Fire

Authorities recovered the body of a child after a house fire on Wendigo Raod Sunday night. Fire crews were called out to a residential structure fire on Wendigo Road at 9pm Sunday. The person who called in the fire said the residence was totally engulfed in flames- and that a small child was still inside.
Two adults, identified as 38 year old Glen Michael Campbell and 24 year old Nicole Ann Julien and a small child were taken to Grand Itasca Medical Center for injuries related to the fire and smoke inhalation. During fire-fighting operations, firemen recovered the remains of a small child in the residence. The child’s name is being withheld.

GRPD Name the Canine Contest

You’re invited to help the Grand Rapids police department name its newest officer. The city is getting a new canine unit. Zcar is retiring after 8 years with Sargent Geise. This new canine will be with officer Jeremy Nelson.
Open voting is already underway. Grand rapids police chief Jim Denny said the canine unit is an important part of the police force.

Visit city of Grand rapids mn dot com. Or, if you are already on facebook, look up GRPD Name the new K-9 contest. Some names that have already been suggested include Cjuo, Luke, Spartan, Zeus and Copper. If you don’t have access to the internet, visit the police department for an entry blank.
The person who suggests the name that is chosen will win a $100 gift certificate from Glens Outdoors and a sweatshift donated from the Cap Baker Lions.
